Counselors Aren’t Meant to Deliver Clinical Care

School counselors are extraordinary professionals. The problem is structural — they were never resourced to deliver ongoing mental health treatment, and student need has far outpaced what any one person can carry.
250:1
Counselor-to-student ratio
California recommends 1:250. Many districts run higher — while counselors simultaneously manage college prep, scheduling, and family crises. There is no capacity left for clinical care.
4–8 weeks
Wait time for community referrals
When counselors refer out, families wait weeks — sometimes months. By the time the first appointment arrives, the crisis has escalated or the family has disengaged entirely.
42%
Students never receive treatment
Most students with real mental health needs go entirely untreated. Administrators manage attendance, behavioral incidents, and consequences — not prevention.
"Your district deserves a partner who delivers immediate, professional clinical care — not just another referral list."

What Wellity Is Not

We don't replace your counselors
Your counselors know your students. We give them the clinical backup they've never had — licensed therapists and psychiatrists who handle what counselors aren't resourced to do.
We don't retain students from your community
Our goal is wellness and re-integration — not building a patient panel. Students step down from intensive care back to your school community stronger than before.
We don't bill your district
Core services are funded through CYBHI. We handle all grant administration, billing, compliance, and reporting. You don't file anything or manage new budget line items.

Untreated Mental Health Has a Real Price Tag for Your District

ADA Funding Lost
$2,100
per chronically absent student / year
California districts receive ~$70–100 per student per day. One student missing 30+ days from untreated mental health conditions costs your district real budget — every year, invisibly.
Admin Time on Behavioral Crises
8 hours / week
untracked administrative cost
Every crisis managed without clinical backup is hours your principals and counselors spend on consequence rather than leadership. That time has a cost your board never sees.
Average Wait Time
4–8 weeks
for community mental health referrals
The student you refer today waits weeks. By then the situation has escalated, the family has disengaged, or the school year is over. Delay is not neutral — it compounds.
Districts that delay the 2026–27 implementation window lose a full school year.  The students who need help this semester don't get it until next year.

The Students No One Else Would Take. We Did.

A Bay Area county behavioral health agency came to Wellity with a cohort of justice-involved youth that had exhausted every other option in the county. Here is what happened.
[01]
Challenge:
Schools lacked the clinical infrastructure to support high-acuity students—leading to repeated hospitalizations, missed class time, and no clear path to sustained care.
[02]
Solution:
Wellity embedded a full clinical care model—therapy, psychiatry, and coordination—integrated directly with schools, families, and county systems.

"The Students Who So Best Are The Ones Who Support Early — Before They’re in Crisis"

Monique Ordoñez, LMFT — Chief Strategy Officer
Leading Wellity's school-based mental health expansion
Background
Worked with schools and hospitals — seen where students fall through gaps between disconnected systems.
Approach
Leading Wellity's CYBHI expansion with clinical teams. Therapy, psychiatry, crisis intervention, and outcome reporting at low cost — built to be sustainable.
Why schools
Schools are where students spend most of their time—and where needs are most visible. Early, on-campus care drives better outcomes than referrals.
Now
Expanding Wellity’s model to more districts—faster implementation, dedicated teams, and care where it’s needed most.

Everything You Need to Know

What does this actually cost our district?
Therapy, crisis intervention, group programs, and staff training are low-cost through CYBHI — no cost to your district budget. Psychiatric services are covered for students with Medi-Cal; others may apply for those without.
We've had vendors overpromise before. Why is Wellity different?
We earn trust by being direct and transparent about costs. We serve over 15,000 students annually through Kaiser and Medi-Cal, extending existing infrastructure. The San Mateo County case study shows our success with challenging cases.
How much class time will students miss?
We schedule during lunch, study halls, or non-core periods and rotate subjects to avoid repeated misses. Telehealth options mean many students miss zero class time. We coordinate with teachers to minimize disruption.
Can students continue services during summer?
Yes — services continue year-round via telehealth or in-person at our community clinic locations. Treatment continuity across summer is one of the most significant factors in sustained improvement.
How are you different from our school counselors?
School counselors do vital work — academic planning, college prep, and family communication. Wellity provides licensed therapists and psychiatrists for clinical treatment, giving counselors the backup they need.
How do you protect student privacy?
All services are fully HIPAA and FERPA compliant. We share information with school counselors only with explicit family consent, and only what's necessary — safety plans, accommodations, or general progress. Therapy content remains confidential.
What if a student needs more intensive care?
If a student needs PHP, IOP, or inpatient care, we coordinate those transitions. Wellity operates PHP and IOP programs directly — the same programs that served the San Mateo county cohort. We maintain care coordination throughout so students don't fall through the cracks between levels of care.
